On Saturday October 23, Jason Harrod treated us to some really inspiring, soulful music. I had many guests tell me they enjoyed hearing Jason again, having first discovered his music at a previous concert a few years ago. And, I had many people tell me that hearing his music for the first time was a really great experience. We had a pretty full house, and happily, while Jason got rave reviews on his music, I even got a few compliments myself - on the sangria!

On Sunday October 24, Woody Pines (3 incredible musicians and consummate performers) came to sit a spell and play some good ol' timey music. For a change, this concert was outdoors in the courtyard. While it was a bit warm in the beginning, things cooled off and Woody Pines played well into the dusk and dark, which was pretty darn awesome. So many people told me they enjoyed the music! We had guests from as far as Banks and Ozark visit just for this show.

All in all, this weekend was really grand. I feel so lucky to have been able to hear such great music with friends and family.

Coming Our Way October 23 and 24 - Extravaganza and Such!

We don't have a name for the weekend yet. But, it's going to be one heck of a weekend. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate me being another year older and still kickin’.

October 23 - Jason Harrod, a favorite of mine and of Terra Cotta House Concerts will be playing songs from his upcoming new album, and hopefully a couple of oldie-but-goody songs too.

October 24 - Woody Pines, a new favorite of mine will be playing sweet, sweet music for us in the afternoon and if it is cool enough we’ll be out in the courtyard. I particularly love "Chew Tobacco Rag" and "Satisfied," but I'm going to throw it out there that I'm jazzed about every one of the songs I've heard. These guys are going to be a lot of fun. Brang those dancin shoes, ya'll!

We still have a lot of unpacked boxes, and not enough furniture to fill this bigger house, but we are ready for a show! We are booked for October, but I'm evaluating musicians for other months. I'm putting in requests to some of my favorite musicians, and I'm beginning to sort through email requests from musicians that I have not yet heard. And, I'm listening to my friends when they tell me what they want to hear. So yeah, I'm listening to a lot of music! And, I just updated my status to "booking" at concertsinyourhome.com

All right! I will be moving our status on www.concertsinyourhome.com to "Booking" the day the house papers are signed. Hopefully, that will be on 2/1/10.

Here are some photos of our new location. These photos are from the current owners, who have lovely things. We plan to furnish it a little more casually though!

Since this will be our house concert location for the next few years, I thought I'd write a little about the historic aspect of the house. Built in 1927, it was the home of civil rights activist, Juliette Hampton Morgan. Photos of the house and of Ms. Morgan can be found in the state archives. The Montgomery, AL library is named after her as well. Here is some information about Ms. Morgan on the Teaching Tolerance website.

Jason Harrod draws from the best traditions of American music to create a sound all his own. His songs about lost love, found joys, and spiritual longing have garnered him a loyal following across the country.

Harrod's latest release, Bright As You, finds him backed by a crack group of musicians featuring Phil Madeira (Emmylou Harris, Buddy Miller, Al Green, Mavis Staples). The songs, sung in a rich, brooding tenor and underscored by inventive guitar work, range from the Beatle-esque "Bright As You" to the blues-infused "Night, Fall On Me," to the dark, ambient lament "Messed Up Everywhere Blues."

After releasing 3 albums to critical acclaim as half of the folk-pop duo Harrod and Funck, Jason ventured out on his own. In 2000, he won first place in the bluegrass category of MerleFest's Chris Austin Songwriting competition, an honor held by Grammy Nominees Tift Merrit and Gillian Welch. He followed that up with a first place win in the 2001 North Carolina Songwriters Co-op contest and in 2002 appeared on the Legendary Arthur Smith "Carolina Calling" television show along with Alison Krauss and Union Station.

Living in Skin, Jason's acoustic-based first album, features the award-winning songs "When I Get Home" and "Carolina," the latter of which was included on WUNC's compilation CD, Best of Back Porch Music.

There is no cover charge for this event, but I will pass the the bag around, suggesting a $10-$20 contribution (more if you can, less if you can't). All proceeds from the event go to the artist, so be as generous as possible.

CDs will be available for purchase after the concert for $10.

Light snacks and drinks will be served! I'm planning on making some homemade goodies to share.

Dave Riley, a fantastic blues musician from the Mississipi Delta will be visiting Montgomery, AL on May 19. He will play at Terra Cotta beginning at 7pm.

Born in Hattiesburg, Mississppi, Dave spent his early years learning Gospel. Barely a teenager he moved to Chicago and ended up living on the westside near Maxwell Street where he was steeped in the blues. It wasn't untill he was drafted to serve in Vietnam that he began to take the blues seriously. During the time he served in the army he was exposed to many types of music, not only the blues but big band, rocknroll, and jazz. He ended up playing in a military band which traveled from base to base entertaining the troups and sometimes became the opening act for USO shows.Dave Riley met up with Blues legends Sam Carr, Frank Frost, and JohnWeston, and revitalized his career in the mid 90s and they formed a friendship and a music bond which would lead Dave back to the Delta and back into Blues full time. Dave has been playing music in the Delta and taking the Delta back to Chicago just like all those Blues men before him. Dave Riley has a highly-acclaimed CD, "Whiskey, Money, And Women" out on the Fedora record label.

Jason Harrod was wonderful! He had the rapt attention of the audience. He ain't award-winning for nothing folks. We can't wait to have him back later in 2008. The atmosphere was just right: relaxed, happy, attentive, appreciative, and glowing with good feelings. And afterwards, there was even a bit of silliness. I truly believe that everyone enjoyed it as much as I did, and for that I feel blessed.
